Ocular Health Technology
Optomap imaging provides our doctors with a 200 degree view inside the eye. The scans can facilitate the early detection and management of diseases in the retina. Diagnosis of retinal holes or tears, retinal detachments, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy is made more easily using this technology. Imaging is viewed during the appointment and our doctors can educate you on your eye specifics! To learn more you can visit the optos website at: https://www.optos.com/en/
Optical Coherence Tomography, or OCT, is similar to an ultrasound of the back of your eye. This provides our doctors with a cross-sectional image of the different layers of the retina. It also can measure the thickness of your optic nerve. It is non-invasive and easy to complete. This technology is imperative for monitoring glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic changes in the eye.
HUMPHREY’S VISUAL FIELD
This instrument tests side vision or peripheral vision. Vision loss can occur within the eye or deeper within the brain pathways. The results of a visual field test can help our doctors detect, measure, and locate the area causing vision loss. Visual field testing is useful to detect or monitor glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain tumours, and pituitary tumours. It is also used routinely to monitor for side effects of some medications such as Plaquenil. We have the model required by the ministry of transportation of Ontario to certify your visual fields meet driving standard.
DRY EYE CLINIC
Dry Eye Disease (DED) is one of the fastest growing health problems over the past 10 years in western culture. Along with other fast growing health problems, such a type 2 diabetes, facial rosacea, fibromyalgia, Crone’s Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Lupus, and Rheumatoid Arthritis, it is thought that our immune systems are changing resulting in an increase in commonality and severity.
DED can manifest with mild symptoms of watery and occasionally burning eyes wither upon waking or end of day. More moderate symptoms find discharge upon waking and constant burning. Severe findings can result in damage to the front surface of the eye resulting in a reduced or loss of vision.
With more moderate and severe symptoms advanced diagnostic testing will determine how aggressive to treat the DED. Our clinic offers “meibography” (imaging of the eyelid oil glands) and osmolarity (measurement of the inflammatory level of the tears) to ensure proper management.
Treatments should commensurate with the symptoms. In early DED hot soaks to the eyelid margins and simple artificial tears can provide relief. More severe manifestations may require more aggressive treatments such as medicated towelettes, prescriptions drops/ointments, oral medications, Blephex ®, and even serum or amniotic stem cell membranes.
All levels of DED can be managed in our clinic.
